Rex Marine Center’s Recommendations to Best Prepare Your Boat Before Winter Storage

As the boating season winds down, now is the perfect time to prepare your boat for winter storage. Taking the right steps in the fall will save you money, prevent damage, and ensure a smooth launch come spring.

At Rex Marine Center in Norwalk, our service team recommends completing a few simple but crucial tasks before hauling or storing your boat this season. Whether you’re dropping off your boat for professional storage or taking one last ride, these proactive steps will help protect your investment.

1. Inspect and Note Any Needed Repairs

Before storage, look over your boat and make note of anything that needs repair, from minor engine issues to loose hardware or worn canvas. Addressing small problems now can save you from bigger headaches in spring.

While you’re at Rex Marine’s fuel dock, top off your fuel tank to reduce condensation and pump out your waste tank. Add a bit of fresh water and pump out again to clean the system. You can also consult Scott, Jake, Mike, or Harry in our Ships’ Store for personalized recommendations to help winterize your boat properly.

2. Schedule Maintenance and Repairs Early

Performing maintenance during the layup ensures your boat is ready to go when the water warms up. Avoid delays next spring caused by overheating engines, leaky hatches, or damaged canvas.

3. Clean and Protect Canvas, Carpeting, and Upholstery

Remove all snap-in carpeting, cushions, and canvas covers—especially those with mold or mildew. Triple S of Norwalk offers winter storage for cleaned canvas and cushions, while Seafarer Canvas & Interiors can repair torn canvas, replace missing snaps, or restore cloudy Eisenglass.

Tip: Never lay rubber-backed carpeting on seats—it can permanently discolor the vinyl.

4. Prevent Mold and Mildew Inside the Cabin

Empty your refrigerator and lockers, remove PFDs, charts, and water toys, and leave lockers open for air circulation. Place mildew-control containers (available in our Ships’ Store) throughout your cabin to prevent unpleasant odors and mold growth.

Clean the head, galley, and enclosed areas, or schedule a “Detail Cleaning” with Rex Marine. If your bilge shows signs of oil or mold, have it professionally cleaned before storage.

5. Prepare Systems for Winterization

Once your boat is hauled out, Rex Marine will power wash the bottom to remove slime, barnacles, and buildup. Be sure to indicate on your Winterization Form which systems need attention — such as:

  • Freshwater tanks
  • Water heater
  • Air conditioning
  • Ice maker and washdown pumps
  • Bilge and sump pumps
  • Fish wells and transom showers

We also recommend changing your engine and transmission oil and filters, servicing sterndrives, and winterizing your engines according to manufacturer specifications.

6. Consider Winter Upgrades or Installations

Winter is also a great time to plan boat upgrades or custom installations, from electronics to lighting, new canvas, or accessories. Bringing in holiday or birthday “boat gifts” over the winter ensures they’re installed before the spring rush.

Our service team can help you choose the right upgrades and install them professionally, so your boat is ready for next season.
