5 Quick Checks Before Leaving the Dock

You’ve packed the cooler, loaded the crew, and fired up the engines... but before leaving the dock, taking a quick safety check can save you from a frustrating (or dangerous) day on the water.

Here are 5 commonly overlooked items boaters should check before heading out this season:

1. Battery Switch & Electronics

Make sure your battery switch is in the correct position and that your electronics are powering up properly before departure. GPS units, VHF radios, bilge pumps, and navigation lights should all be functioning as expected.

2. Bilge Pump Operation

A bilge pump issue is one of the most common problems found at the dock. Quickly test your bilge pump and float switch before heading out, especially after heavy rain or washdowns.

3. Dock Lines & Fenders

It sounds simple, but loose lines and forgotten fenders cause more headaches than most people realize. Double-check that everything is properly stowed before leaving your slip.

4. Safety Gear

Make sure life jackets, fire extinguishers, flares, whistles, and throwable devices are onboard and easy to access. Expired or missing safety equipment is one of the biggest things boaters overlook each spring.

5. Fuel & Engine Check

A quick look at fuel levels, fuel separators, engine warning lights, and fluid leaks can prevent problems before they happen. Catching something at the dock is always better than discovering it offshore.
